Infant Sleep Patterns - Three Tips for New Parents

My niece and her husband are proud parents of a new baby boy. They are adjusting to their new family member who brings joy to them day and night :)

While we sadly, don't live in the same town, we have been able to see our new grand nephew through Skyping. My conversation with her yesterday was about sleep. How is their newborn sleeping at night - and not surprisingly - only a couple of hours.

Even if you aren't expecting a new baby, you may know someone who is. Here are the top three tips I gave my niece:

1. During the day expose the baby to daylight. Take your baby outside whether it is in your yard or better yet out for a walk so mom and dad can get some exercise. Daylight suppresses melatonin and this is how we start to set the circadian rhythm. Keep in mind that their delicate skin burns easily so keep their skin protected.

2. Darkness stimulates melatonin. When you are getting them ready for their night time sleep, keep the lights low. A night light is better than a bright table lamp or ceiling light. Help keep that melatonin secretion going by keeping the room dark while the baby is sleeping.

3. Start a bedtime routine so that your baby will begin to associate certain habits with sleep. It may include a bath, a short little book, a feeding, and a lullaby CD.
