It is never too early to establish a bedtime routine for your baby. Eventually certain activities will trigger that sleepy part of the brain that will signal to your infant that it's time to go to sleep.
The extra motion and kicking of a bath tires babies out and sets them up for a long sleep. Give him/her extra time in the bath if your baby enjoys it being sure that he/she doesn't get chilled.
Less products used on a newborn's skin the better. As the baby gets older use a baby wash that's free of harmful chemicals.
Many new moms use the after bath time as an opportunity for a baby massage - a great way to provide some extra touch and tenderness. But don't use any products that contain phthalates.
"This new research provides strong evidence that phthalates in baby products end up inside babies’ bodies, where they pose real-world risks for reproductive system damage among baby boys. We hope these results spur companies to remove phthalates from products sold in the U.S. Many of these same chemicals are banned from baby products in other countries. There is no justification for keeping them on the shelves here,” said Jane Houlihan, Vice President for Research of Environmental Working Group.
The company that is committed to using only safe ingredients (they have voluntarily banned over 1500 ingredients) is Beauty Counter. We use their products for ourselves and for our grandchildren. A baby's sensitive skin requires safer body washes and lotions. You can check a product's safety using the Skin Deep database on the Environmental Working Group (www.EWG.org) database. Ideal is a 1-2. Anything higher is exposing your infant to unnecessary harmful chemicals.

Two other baby products that can be harmful and contain toxic ingredients are baby oil and baby powder.
According to HealthyChild.org, "Mineral oil is a petroleum derivative that coats the skin like Saran Wrap, which prevents the skin from breathing, absorbing and excreting. It also slows the skin's natural cell development, causing the skin to age prematurely. Note that baby oil is 100% mineral oil - and 100% bad for your baby's sensitive skin."
These diapers are more absorbent than regular diapers and help keep tender baby's skin dry.
Most of them provide 12 hours of leak protection.
Super absorbent means sheets stay dry too so there is less laundry.
The unique flow through pad wicks away moisture that not only wakes up your baby but also irritates skin.
Just remove it in the morning and throw it away.Sposie Booster Pads Diaper Doubler - 3 Packs of 30 Pads
Did you know that swaddling can help your baby sleep better? It gives them a sense of security and comfort so that they fall asleep quicker and stay asleep longer. Are you familiar with the startle reflex?
If this is your first baby, you probably have noticed that with a sudden loud noise the arms and legs extend and the baby starts to cry. Sometimes the startle reflex kicks in even without a loud noise, but the sudden movement and action of the arms and legs will stimulate the baby and wake up even the most soundly sleeping infant.
That's where a swaddle blanket comes in.
Most infants love the snug, comforting fit of the blanket for sleeping. The blanket also prevents the little arms and legs from flailing and arousing them.
This blanket is made out of 100% cotton muslin so that babies don't over heat. It is shaped in a square so parents have to wrap the baby with the swaddle wrap technique. Use them as a swaddle blanket for your newborn and they often become a toddler's favorite blankie.Muslin Swaddle Blanket 4 Pack, Safari Friends
What makes swaddling or tightly wrapping your baby so effective is that it provides a somewhat similar experience/feel as the womb.
The Miracle Swaddle Blanket is a ready made swaddle blanket with three arm flaps, so it stays secure and snug. Made out of 100% knit cotton, it is a one size fits all and fits up to about 14 weeks.
Parents can begin swaddling as soon as the child is born.
Depending on the time of year and the baby's room temperature, you may want a swaddle blanket for warmer temps and one for cooler temperatures.
Because any sudden loud noise stimulates the startle reflex in babies, the use of a white noise device can help drown out the unexpected noise of a loud telephone ring, a loud knocking at the door or the loud buzz of your dryer.Selecting a white noise machine for your baby? Consider these options
Some machines have settings for 15", 30" or 45" with an automatic shutoff and others have the option of continual play unless turned off.
Light or No Light
You can also select a machine that includes an option for a night light.
Music or White Noise
Are you using it to mask noises or do you want a soothing lullaby
The ability to adjust the volume based on the needs and your environment
Portable for Traveling
Consistency is important for a baby. The familiar sound of the white noise will help to trigger the sleep response even in unfamiliar settings.
The constant hum of a fan can work just as well as long as its not a super quiet fan.
My daughter has used white noise devices as part of her arsenal of baby sleep aids. She keeps one in all of her kids bedrooms starting when they were infants. The routine sound played every night helps to signal that it is bedtime. This baby white noise machine has 6 different sounds - white noise, ocean, heartbeat, summer night, thunder, or running brook.
It can operate on batteries ( four AA) or by electricity. Set it for 15, 30, or 60 minutes or run it all night.
