Magnesium As A Sleep Aid

I was first introduced to magnesium as a sleep aid several years ago and have never looked back.  There are lots of reasons why you may want to consider supplementing with this mineral as well.

Insomnia or trouble sleeping may be a sign of low magnesium levels.

Types of Magnesium Supplements

There are many different ways to get your magnesium to a healthy level.  I've tried them all and here are your options as well:

magnesium and insomnia

1.  Pills or Supplements

2.  Powdered to make into a tea

3.  Magnesium Spray

4.  Magnesium Lotion

5.  Magnesium Flakes

6.  Magnesium Drops

7.  Foods rich in magnesium

Best Magnesium to Take

The best magnesium to take is the one that will allow you to get your magnesium levels up without experiencing the side effect of loose stools.

According to Carolyn Dean, M.D., N.D., who is a medical doctor, naturopath, acupuncturist, homeopath, herbalist, and certified clinical nutritionist, and the author of The Magnesium Miracle (Revised and Updated Edition)

"Picometer magnesium taken orally is shown to be even more effective in raising magnesium levels than IV magnesium .... Picometer magnesium, then IV magnesium, then magnesium oil are the most absorbable  forms of magnesium in that order.  Next come magnesium glycinate, magnesium taurate and magnesium orotate.  A very close fifth is magnesium citrate, but since it's usually cheaper than other oral forms, it's become the post popular."

Magnesium Oil Benefits

Magnesium oil is absorbed through the skin via  a spray.  Some sprays may sting or leave your skin itching. The benefit of the Asutra Magnesium Oil is that it absorbs quickly into your skin without causing your skin to itch or burn.

The spray can be applied to your arms, legs or stomach for general absorption.  If you have muscle pain, such as leg cramps or back pain, apply it to your problem areas.  For best absorption, apply it to clean skin (not over your body lotion) after a warm shower when your pores are open.

If you feel tingling when you first use it, you can dilute it with water.  With repeated use you will find you will no longer feel any skin sensation.

ASUTRA's magnesium oil is a pure version from naturally ocurring brine straight from the Ancient Zechstein Seabed and imported from the Netherlands.  "On average we estimate each spray to be about 20mg of pure magnesium."

How To Take Magnesium

According to Carol Dean, M.D. N.D, "Take your first dose of magnesium when you wake up in the morning and the last dose at bedtime.  If you take a third dose, make it late in the afternoon. Magnesium is most deficient in the early morning and late afternoon."

I always take either magnesium pills or a cup of hot "tea" of Natural Calm before bed combined with magnesium oil that is sprayed on the skin or in lotion form. It's like a natural sleeping pill - it helps to calm and relax me and has made a big difference in my ability to fall asleep.

Natural Calm Magnesium Supplement

Natural Calm is a powder form of magnesium citrate.  It is made by adding 2-3 oz of hot water to a heaping teaspoon of powder in a mug. Stir until it dissolves. Then add more warm water and sip it.

You can simply add the powder to a glass of cold water if you prefer or if you don't have the ability to heat your water.

As with any natural supplement, it's best to start with less - start with 1/2 teaspoon and build up to a heaping teaspoon per serving.

It can be taken with or without food.  I make mine using hot water and have a glass in the morning and then one before bed, as it really helps to relax me.

You can find Natural Calm as most health food stores, but the best price is found at Amazon.  I like the unflavored one but you can also get it in flavors such as raspberry lemon, plain lemon or orange.
